Yes, Lord
Believing is seeing.
She said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’ —John 11:27
Jesus had just asked Martha the most important question anyone can be asked: Do you believe this? He had declared Himself to be the resurrection and the life, promising that whoever lives and believes in Him shall never die. Martha did not hesitate.
Her answer was immediate and unqualified: “Yes, Lord.” But she didn’t stop there. She told Him why she believed. She believed because she knew who He was—the Christ, the Son of God, the One promised from ancient days who was to come into the world. Everything visible pointed toward death, not life. Yet she believed because she had settled the question of who Jesus is. If He is the Christ, the Son of God, then His words are true—every one of them. His identity is the guarantee of His promise.
The sole condition remains what it has always been: believe in Jesus. Not believe in a doctrine about Him, not believe in the possibility of resurrection, but believe in Him—who He is and what He has promised. Martha didn’t recite a creed; she addressed Him directly: “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ.”
The result is certainty. When you know who Jesus is, His promises carry the full weight of His authority. The resurrection of life is not a hopeful theory; it is the guaranteed word of the Son of God. Martha stood at a grave and chose to believe the One who is greater than the grave. Her “yes” was enough.
Jesus is still asking the same question today: Do you believe this? Your answer changes everything. He is the Christ. He is the Son of God. He is enough.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, like Martha, I say yes. I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who came into the world to save sinners. Thank You that I don’t need perfect understanding or flawless theology, just faith in who You are. Anchor my heart in the truth that because of who You are, every promise You’ve made is certain. You are enough, Lord. In Your name, Amen.
