The Joy of the Unbreakable Grip: Day 28 of Joy
He holds on to you.
Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
—Romans 8:35-39
We live with a deep-seated anxiety about our own grip strength. We use a human measuring rod to test our endurance, thinking, “If things get any harder, or if I get any more beaten by this season, I’m not sure I can hold on.” This creates a fear that our eternal security depends entirely on our own ability to cling to the rope.
Today’s passage in Romans 8 flips the responsibility entirely. Your safety is actually determined by how tightly God is gripping you. Always remember: He loves you and holds on to you.
Paul scans the entire universe for threats—listing affliction, financial devastation, systemic danger, demonic powers, the anxieties of the present, and the unknowns of the future. Then he delivers the grand conclusion: Nothing in all creation can break His grip. Your joy is sustained by an external, sovereign power. When you wander, when you are weak, or when you are flat on your back from life’s heavy blows, His hands remain locked around you.
The 90/10 Rule of Sovereign Protection
[read this article to learn more about the 90/10 rule]
The 10%: Your fluctuating strength, your failures, and the overwhelming circumstances that make you feel like you are slipping.
The 90%: The unbreakable love of God that is anchored in Christ Jesus. The fact that His grip remains constant regardless of your performance.
If you focus on the 10 percent, you will live a life of chronic spiritual insecurity. When you give the 90 percent of your attention to the fact that He holds on to you, your joy is firmly gripped. You aren’t hanging onto Him for dear life; you are resting in the hands that hold the universe together.
Open your hands face up in front of you. Imagine that your life, your family, and your future are entirely inside those hands, and then imagine Jesus placing His scarred hands completely over yours. Say out loud: “Nothing can separate me from the love of Christ today. He holds on to me.” Let that strengthen you in moments of weariness.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I praise You for Your relentless, unbreakable love. Thank You that my eternal security is held by Your strength and not my own. Today, I choose to stop striving and start resting in Your permanent grip, knowing that absolutely nothing can ever pull me from Your hands. Amen.
