The Joy of the Ultimate Authority: Day 21 of Joy
He is King of Kings.
Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of eternal life to which you were called... I charge you... to keep this command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. God will bring this about in his own time. He is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords. —1 Timothy 6:12-15
Life can feel like a “good fight” that we are losing. We face daily battles with our health, our work, and our own inner doubts. In the heat of these struggles, it’s easy to feel alone, as if the outcome of the war depends entirely on our own limited strength. We wonder if goodness will ever truly prevail.
But 1 Timothy 6 shifts our gaze from the struggle to the Sovereign. Paul reminds us that our endurance is anchored in the character of God, who is the “blessed and only Sovereign.” The ultimate foundation for your courage today is this: He is King of kings and Lord of lords.
If Jesus is the King of kings, it means that every other authority—every boss, every doctor, every world leader, and even death itself—is subordinate to Him. He doesn’t just hold power; He is the power that “will bring this about in his own time.” Jesus is enough to see you through to the end.
The 90/10 Rule of Sovereign Peace
[read this article to learn more about the 90/10 rule]
The 10%: The “good fight” of your daily circumstances and the daunting presence of worldly authorities that seem to have the final say.
The 90%: The absolute sovereignty of God. The fact that He is the King of every king and the Lord of every lord.
If you focus on the 10 percent, you will live in a state of anxiety, feeling like you have to win the battle on your own. When you give the 90 percent of your attention to the fact that He is King of kings, your joy finds a permanent anchor. You aren’t fighting for victory; you are fighting from the victory of your King.
Identify a “ruler” in your life right now—perhaps a looming deadline, a financial burden, or a difficult relationship—that feels like it is dominating your peace. Look at it and say: “You are not the king of my life; Jesus is the King of kings.” Let that remind you that He has the final word over every detail of your day.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and that Your authority is over all. Help me to fight the good fight of faith today with joy, knowing that You are in control of all things and will bring Your promises to pass in Your perfect time. Amen.
