The Joy of the Father's Heart: Day 10 of Joy
He loves you.
As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust. ... But from eternity to eternity the Lord’s faithful love is toward those who fear him.
— Psalm 103:13-14, 17 CSB
Many people assume that God’s love is a performance-based transaction, believing that God is looking down with frustration and judging our mistakes, our fatigue, and our fragile emotions. This leads to thinking that joy is something that is “earned” by finally getting our act together.
Psalm 103 reveals a different reality. Your joy today is not found in your strength, but in a simple, profound truth: He loves you. This love isn’t based on a version of you that has it all figured out. The text says He “remembers that we are dust.” He isn’t surprised by your limitations; He designed you, and He knows exactly what you are made of. Just as a father doesn’t expect an infant to run a marathon, God doesn’t expect “dust” to be divine. His joy is in being your Father, and your joy is found in being His child.
This is the unsinkable nature of grace. When you realize that His “faithful love” stretches from eternity to eternity, you are freed from the pressure of perfection. You are cared for and don’t have to hide your weakness from Him; your weakness is actually the place where you experience His greatest compassion.
The 90/10 Rule of the Father’s Heart
[read this article to learn more about the 90/10 rule]
The 10%: Your “dust”—your weaknesses, your failures, and the feeling that you aren’t doing enough.
The 90%: His “from eternity to eternity” love. The fact that He is your Father and His compassion is triggered by your needs, not your achievements.
If you focus on the 10 percent, you will live in fear of being “found out.” But when you give the 90 percent of your attention to the fact that He loves you, your joy becomes a constant anchor.
Today, when you feel overwhelmed by your own shortcomings, stop and say: “I am dust, but I am His dust.” Intentionally lean into the truth of His love and let that settle your heart. Instead of trying to be strong for God, find joy in being His child.
Prayer: Father, thank You that You know me completely and love me perfectly. Thank You for the joy of Your compassion. Thank You for remembering that I am dust and for loving me from eternity to eternity. I rest in Your heart today. Amen.
